Gauging thickness of yarn and size of knitting needles

This gauge will be very helpful when you are knitting yarn that is handspun or you have lost the bands for - simply wrapping the yarn around any ruler and counting the number of wraps per 5 centimeter allows you to see which needle size suits that thread.

I realise that there are countries that still work on the imperial (feet and inch) measurments but perhaps you can get the rulers that have both measurements on them?

This gauge is designed for average knitters, if you are a loose knitter please use a size smaller needle. If you are a tight knitter please use a size larger.
PLY TIMES AROUND RULER

4 30 2.50 3.00
5 28 2.75 3.50
6 26 3.00 3.50
8 24 3.00 4.00
12 20 4.00 5.50
14 18 4.50 6.50

There is also a chart I made up to show the conversion between the different guages of knitting needles used in England, America etc
